How Long Should Wedding Photos Take? | Expert UK Wedding Photography Advice

Wedding photography made simple

According to reports, 75-80% of people marrying are doing so for the first time. How do you know how much time to allow for your quiet time pictures, never mind the group pictures, first dance pictures etc. The good news is an experienced photographer can answer all these questions and guide you through your wedding day.

Bridal and Groom Prep Photos

We typically arrive 2-3 hours before your wedding. The first photos we take will be of the details of the wedding dress, shoes, and wedding rings. We don’t come in and start photographing people straight away. We introduce ourselves and capture the details first. We also suggest that the bride is not the last to get ready, in case the schedule runs late. Second to last is fine, but we want to ensure we capture photos of you in your wedding dress with your family and bridesmaids. My other photographer will capture the groom getting ready and guests arriving.

The Wedding Ceremony Photos

Most wedding ceremonies take around half an hour unless it is a Catholic service. I will be at the front of the room, and my other photographer will be at the back so that we can capture photos from multiple areas of the room.

Group Photos

I always suggest these are taken as soon as the wedding ceremony ends. The main reason is that this is the only time all guests are in the same place, so we can direct them to the location where we will take the photographs. This is much faster than letting them wander and then trying to gather them later. We will have a catch-up before your wedding and prepare a short list of must-have group photos in advance, and ask someone who knows both families to help organise people on the day. These photos usually take about twenty minutes.

Your Quiet Time Photos

Do not stress over these photos. They will be things you have done before, holding hands, looking at each other, nothing to take you out of your comfort zone. This is a time to enjoy yourself as it will be the only time of the day you will be away from all your guests, so it is important to have some time to yourselves and enjoy the excitement of being husband and wife. Again, these photos usually take around twenty minutes, so you are back with family and friends as soon as possible.

The Wedding Breakfast

Most couples have speeches either before or after their meal, although some couples decide they do not want to do any speeches, which is totally fine, as it is up to you what you do for your wedding. A good tip is to give a speech before your meal so you can enjoy it without worrying about it. The table will also be much cleaner.

The Wow Shot

This is typically taken before the first dance and may be a sunset, champagne-spraying, or umbrella photograph. This generally takes about five minutes, as we will set everything up before you come out to have the picture taken.

First Dance Photography

Again, do not stress, we have a few tips to make sure you smash your first dance. Most people don’t like the idea of being watched during the first dance. A good tip is to do a few twirls, your guests will be impressed straight away, and you can also throw a dip to really impress. You don’t have to dance for the whole song; you can ask the DJ to cue your guests to join you on the dance floor before the first dance ends. It is totally up to you.

How long will our photography take?

When it’s your first wedding, it’s easy to assume

  • Photos will take hours
  • You’ll be pulled away from guests constantly
  • Everything needs military-style scheduling

But that’s not how relaxed, natural wedding photography works.

My approach is built around fitting photography into your day, not building the day around photography. The aim is always to keep things calm, flexible, and enjoyable while still capturing the full story beautifully.

As a guide, I always say

Group photos, approx. 20 mins

Quiet time approx 20 mins

Wow, picture approx 5 -10 mins

So in total, less than one hour of your wedding day.

Don’t book your photographer on Price Alone.

Wedding photography is not cheap; the average couple spends between £1500 and £2000. There is no second chance to get your wedding pictures, you can’t go back the next week and do it again. Experience, reliability, storytelling, backup plans, and people skills all matter. Your photographs are among the few things left from your wedding day.

How to avoid it:
Compare value, not just price. Review full galleries, read reviews, and ensure you genuinely connect with the photographer’s style and personality. Ask to view wedding albums to see a variety of pictures from the day.

Not having a second photographer.

Many couples don’t realise the difference a second photographer makes until it’s too late.

Why should I have a second photographer?

One photographer can’t be in two places at once. Key moments, reactions, and alternative angles can easily be missed

How to avoid it:
Consider having two photographers to ensure both preparations and guest reactions are covered, and to capture different perspectives. With a second photographer, you will get many more photographs of moments you missed on your wedding day.

How long till we get our photos?

Depending on your wedding time, I often create a same-day slideshow of your images for you and your guests to view in the evening. You will get all your edited photos within two weeks of your wedding.

Frequently Asked Questions About Wedding Photo Timings

How long do wedding photos usually take?

Wedding photography runs naturally throughout the day rather than happening all at once. Most couples allow 15–20 minutes for couple portraits, 15–20 minutes for group photos, and just a few minutes for key moments like the first dance.

How much time should we allocate for quiet-time photos?

For relaxed, natural couple photos, 15–20 minutes in total is usually sufficient. This time is often split into short, easy moments so you’re not taken away from your guests for long.

Will we miss time with our guests while taking photos?

No, not if the plans are executed correctly. A couple of photos are usually taken during natural breaks in the day, so you can enjoy time with family and friends while still getting beautiful images.

How long do wedding group photos take?

Group photos typically take 15–20 minutes, depending on the number of combinations you’d like. Having a short, organised list and a helper to gather people keeps everything calm and stress-free.

What if it rains on our wedding day?

Rain is common in the UK and doesn’t ruin your photos. Sheltered outdoor spots, indoor locations, and brief weather breaks all work well and often add atmosphere to your images.

What if we feel awkward in front of the camera?

You’re not alone — most couples feel this way. A relaxed photographer will gently guide you, avoid stiff posing, and focus on natural interaction so your photos feel like you. For most of your quiet-time photos, you will be looking at each other, not at the camera.
