Top 5 Questions Couples Ask When Choosing Their Wedding Photographer

Wedding planning is one of the most exciting (and sometimes scary!) times of your life. Among all the decisions you have to make, choosing the right wedding photographer is one of the biggest — after all your photos will be how you relive your big day for years to come.

As a North West based wedding photographer I’ve met hundreds of lovely couples over the years and many of them ask the same questions when looking for their perfect photographer. So I thought I’d share the top 5 most common questions — along with my answers.

How far in advance should we book our wedding photographer?

I can only say it’s never too early to secure your photographer! Most couples book between 12 and 18 months in advance, especially for popular summer dates. Once you’ve set your venue and date, your photographer should be next on the list.
If you’re getting married at one of my regular venues like The Old Palace Chester, Carden Park, or Abbeywood Estate, dates can go quickly, so I always recommend reaching out early to avoid disappointment. I only require a deposit of £150 to secure your date with the balance only due 4 weeks before your wedding.

How many photos will we receive, and when will we get them?

You will get some of your images on the actual day of your wedding. I do a slideshow of approx 20-30 images so you can share with family and friends on the day.

For your final gallery every wedding is unique, but I typically deliver approx 600-750 images, depending on the coverage. I know how eager couples are to see their photos, so I make sure your online gallery is ready within two weeks — no long waits! If you are going on honeymoon they will often be ready before you get back. Your final album normally takes two weeks to be printed.

Do you take posed or natural photos?

My approach is all about natural, candid storytelling. Most of the day, I blend in quietly, capturing genuine smiles, laughter, and emotions as they happen.
That said, we’ll always set aside a short session (about 15–20 minutes) for relaxed portraits of you both — and a stunning ‘wow shot’ later in the evening for something a bit more dramatic.

Do you include a second photographer or drone coverage?

Absolutely! Every one of my packages includes two photographers as standard. This means we can capture both of you getting ready and all those special reactions that happen at the same time.
Weather and venue permitting, I also bring along a drone for some incredible aerial shots of your venue — perfect for adding that cinematic feel to your gallery.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

It’s the North West — so rain is always a possibility! But don’t worry — I always come prepared with creative ideas, lighting equipment, and a positive attitude. Some of the most romantic and memorable photos happen in the rain, and I’ll make sure we get beautiful shots whatever the weather. It is unlikely that it will rain all day on your wedding day so there is a good chance we will get out to do some photographs at some point of the day. I have photographed in all kinds of weather so dont stress about the weather.

Final Thoughts

Choosing your wedding photographer is about more than just liking their photos — it’s about feeling comfortable and confident with the person behind the camera. I always encourage couples to have a chat, look through full galleries, and make sure the photographer’s style fits your vision.

If you’re currently planning your big day and would like to chat about your wedding photography in Cheshire, the North West, or North Wales, I’d love to hear from you.
