Introduction
Every season brings its own kind of magic when it comes to wedding photography ✨
Whether it’s golden summer evenings, frosty winter sparkle, or soft spring blossoms, the timing of your portraits can make all the difference. As a Cheshire wedding photographer, I always help couples plan their timeline around the best light because great lighting = great photos!
Here’s a quick seasonal guide to help you plan when to take your wedding photos for the most beautiful results all year round.
Spring Wedding Photography Tips
Spring weddings are absolutely wonderful the weather’s just right, not too hot or cold, and nature’s starting to come alive again.
This time of year often brings beautiful blooms and fresh greenery, perfect for portraits. If we spot blossom trees or colourful gardens nearby, it’s always worth taking a few minutes for portraits among them the results are always stunning!
Spring weddings are wonderful because they are the perfect temperature! Spring weddings normally mean the potential for some blooms! If we happen to find any type of blooming tree or plant, it will be worth it to give us a few minutes for portraits with it! You’ll LOVE the result!
Planning Your Spring Wedding Photos
With longer days and gentle light, spring gives plenty of flexibility for portraits.
The best time for outdoor photos is mid-afternoon to early evening (3–6 p.m), when the light turns soft and golden.
Keep an eye on the forecast spring showers are common but a few raindrops can actually add a romantic touch! I always have sheltered spots in mind, so we’re covered whatever the weather.
Summer Wedding Photography Tips
Summer weddings are full of energy, sunshine, and celebration! The long days, warm evenings, and golden sunsets make it perfect for relaxed, natural photos.
Summer light can be quite bright during the middle of the day, so the best portraits usually happen later on during golden hour when the light softens beautifully.ummer weddings are amazing! I love that there is so much daylight! In some months, the light will last until 8:30 pm! So, if you’re having a summer wedding, you may need to plan on having just a few minutes to slip out of the reception for your glowy sunset portraits. You will NOT regret this! This is the absolute best light of the day, and you’ll want to have portraits taken during this period. Usually, these portraits happen before the cake cut and the first dance.
Planning Your Summer Wedding Photos
The biggest advantage of a summer wedding is time we’ve got plenty of daylight! The ideal window for couple portraits is between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m, depending on your venue and sunset.
Autumn Wedding Photography Tips
Autumn weddings are absolutely stunning rich colours, cosy light, and a relaxed, romantic feel. The changing leaves make an incredible backdrop for your photos, adding warmth and depth to every image.
The softer light and earlier sunsets mean we can capture beautiful tones throughout the day, perfect for storytelling-style photography.
Autumn weddings are my favourite! The temperature is amazing, and I love the autumn colours! Most of my autumn brides worry about colour, and I just want to encourage you that all I need is one tree with some colour to make it look amazing! A little bit of colour can go a long way!! Your portrait time (and autumn colours) will vary depending on your wedding date. We’ll be sure to discuss this when we approve your final timeline!
Planning Your Autumn Wedding Photos
As daylight fades earlier (around 5 p.m.), it’s best to schedule your portraits in the early afternoon (2–5 p.m.).
If your ceremony runs later, a first look before the ceremony works perfectly to make the most of that golden autumn glow. Indoors, we’ll use candles, fairy lights, and your venue’s warm tones for that signature autumn atmosphere.
Winter Wedding Photography Tips
Winter weddings are pure magic twinkling lights, cosy venues, and soft, romantic lighting. The low winter sun gives a beautiful, gentle glow that flatters every shot.
Because the sun sets early (around 4 p.m.), it’s important to plan portraits before it gets dark.
Planning Your Winter Wedding Photos
If you’re having an early-afternoon ceremony, we’ll have time for outdoor photos before sunset. For later weddings, a first look is a great way to capture natural daylight moments beforehand.
Winter weddings are gorgeous! However, they require some additional planning simply because of the sunset time. The hard part about a winter timeline is that the sun sets around 4 p.m. This means that all of your portraits have to be done before then! This isn’t a problem if you’re having an early afternoon wedding. However, if you’re planning on having a late evening wedding, your photographs will be indoors, mainly using flash/external lighting.
My Final Thoughts
Whatever the season, your wedding photos should feel relaxed, natural, and full of joy not rushed or posed.
The weather can play an important part in your wedding day. It can get really cold in the evening as it is always worth the bridesmaids and brides having something to keep them warm when outside. Items such as a partners jacket, fake fur shawl, white ivory wrap or scarf can keep you feeling warm while you get some amazing night time images.
I always work with my couples to plan a timeline that suits your day, your venue, and the light. From spring blossoms to winter sparkle, there’s beauty in every season you just need to time it right 🌤️
